The current project has a real story to it. At first I had thought, that 25 years of existence are a great result for the project anyhow and that it might be the time to end the project and stop touring … but I couldn't bring myself to do this. There are too many ideas left … one of which was to do a „Women Of Ireland“ project again. As the two previous ones were so unique and interesting, I carried this idea already around with me for a long time.

The special way how female Irish musicians deal with their tradition has fascinated me from the beginning, especially as I could hear and feel it, but can't explain or define how. In the 25 years of this project, again and again for me it was and still is really astonishing and fascinating to experience, that Irish women somehow understand and interpret the music of their homeland in a different way than their male colleagues. It is really difficult to describe, but if one listens to the music with some concentration, it is quite audible and clear to everyone. Probably this has to do with the role and tasks of the women in the Irish society in former times as well as with a different understanding of our existence and life even today. However, I wanted to introduce this one more time to interested audiences in the west of Europe.

First of all I asked Méabh Ní Bheaglaoich from Dingle, recommended to me by Bernd Unstaedt from Kiel, an experienced fiddleplayer and enthusiastic frequenter to Ireland. Méabh, daughter of the famous Seamus Begley from County Kerry, who sings and plays the accordion like her father, accepted to be part of the project and promised to help with the search for the other musicians. Quite fast she could win her cousin Clíodhna Ní Bheaglaoich for the project, daughter of Brendán Begley, her fathers (younger) brother. Clíodhna plays fiddle, viola and dances the old Séan Nós style, which can be looked at as the source for the nowadays so well-known Irish Set Dance … and thanks to an advice from Alison Moffat from München I found Alisha McMahon, fiddle and harp player from County Clare.

So the line-up was found, and the fact, that these three musicians are quite young and still on their way to become well known in the Irish music scene, I got reminded to one of the older projects some time ago. „The Next Generation“ presented three young musicians, too … and so the final name for the project became

Women Of Ireland – The Next Generation
